Fran - Placed 3rd at Quad Nationals in Fort Wayne on Sat

Postby DoubleClutch » 07.25.11 12:38PM

Exciting news to share with the league! Fran, our beloved speed skating coach, skated at quad nationals in Fort Wayne, IN on Saturday...and placed 3rd overall! He had never raced quads indoors before and hadn't skated a race in quads since 1992 -- you know, he's an inliner. Pretty impressive I'd say.

On top of that, he had inline nationals from Sunday until Thursday, skated quad nationals on Saturday, and then skated an inline marathon in Chicago on Sunday!

I have a picture of the quads awards/medal ceremony that I'm trying to figure out how to post! Stay tuned. :D

He says he tried it a few times with ??? (I don't know exactly), but that he jammed and skated circles around everyone - no one could touch him. You'll have to get the specifics from him!

I think he meant when he owned a rink in Hackensack he played with the team that practiced there (I imagine one of the NJ teams..)

Yeah - he said he doesn't want to injure himself for his sport. I can understand that, although he's a beast on his skates and his bike!

I think you mean Hackettstown. The team there was Sisters of Mayhem, which morphed into North Jersey Roller Derby, and then splintered into the Psycho 78s (who left the rink) and Skyland Roller Girls (who stayed there).

Fran's speed team now practices at Garden State's rink in Newark. He's an amazing skater. Been bringing some South American-grown quad gear around lately, it's pretty cool.

third place is great, it's difficult imagine someone skating faster than Fran

But this is QUADS...Fran's true passion is INLINE speed skating. Have Mako tell you about the time he paced Fran on 9W on his bike...and Fran's pace was insane! I think at one point he even passed Mako (on his bike)!!! I would like to think that his involvement with GGRD is what got him back into Quads and even contemplating racing in them.
