Wow, I can't believe we haven't posted about this in the forums yet. My oversight? I'm fired.

MONDAY NIGHT AUGUST 22ND
FREE FREE FREE
Gotham Girls Roller Derby scrimmage
6:30pm to 8:00pm
Outdoors under the stars
at the High Line Rink - 30th street at 10th Avenue in Manhattan

The Gotham Girls take over the new High Line rink! The league hosts a public scrimmage between two ad-hoc teams made up of skaters from across the league: the "Coney Island Wonder Wheels" and the "Staten Island Fairies".

Come watch for free and enjoy the beer/wine/food at 'The Lot' adjacent under the High Line! Or, strap on some skates and get out there yourself (although w/ no derby contact permitted!) from 8pm until closing at 10pm.

6:30-8:00pm - perfect for post-work happy hour entertainment. Come cheer on the ladies and then share a post-scrimmage drink under the High Line.

Hey Ladies!
Just wanted to give you all the heads-up on the High-line Rink... I skated there a few weeks ago. The surface is literally the olde parking lot surface patched over many, many times... with a nice paint-job on it. Seriously bumpy... kinda like skiing a black diamond but flat... OK that might be an exaggeration. ;) Please be careful and if you have not skated there yet go check it out and see really if you should be scrimmaging on it.
I don't think there is any room on the outside of the derby track... just barricades. It's a bit of an odd shape as well.

The mom in me may be talkin' here but it really is not a great surface for derby. You all are looking so good out there!!! Don't want to see any of you get hurt on this...

Lot's o' derby love,

I've been there too and it's not as bad as all that. When we were homeless, we would have totally killed for such a space! Oh how far we've come :-)

Lol yeah, being homeless definitely toughened us up, and taught me to always wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors :P

I think I'm going with outdoor wheels...

I was there this past week to see how to go about getting there.
I would say the skating area is oval shaped. The boundaries are lined by
plastic forms maybe 4 feet tall.
The actual skating area seems bigger than the usual boundaries used
during the bouts.
The surface calls for wearing some protective gear.
And not the house's gear, it's not worth the $5.00 rental fee.
I sure will be present on Monday eve, if only to see who makes up
the Staten Island Fairies.

just to make sure everyone understands...
as per
viewtopic.php?p=72074#p72074

The "Staten Island Fairies" are not a regular standing GGRD team; nor are the "Coney Island Wonder Wheels."

It's going to be as if the New York Mets split up their roster for a charity bout and just for fun called themselves the "Stengels" and the "Sheas," just for one day. Then after that event they went right back to being the New York Mets.

Feel free to root for the Fairies, of course! We just don't want any disappointed or confused fans out there.

Video is well done. The interviewees selected to be in the video, for the most part, are very good.

This was the best thing ever. The surface was not bad at all (not your sport court but still), it's GORGEOUS skating in fresh air under blue sky - I really wish the rink was always going to be open.

And any time I can go directly to the Kim Chee Taco Truck after practice is right on.
It's all about the quad(riceps)

Or he just didn't recognize the structure (by which I'm assuming he means strategies and positioning) that was there.

Didn't much agree with his opinions, but I did like his glasses.

Yeah his interview was actually quite a bit longer before the edits.
Let's just say he wasn't a fan in general.
He couldn't recognize any athleticism or strategy going on out there, at least not as he recognized it.
But we gave him his fair shake, and hey, from what it seems, he came all the way up from Philly to check it out, so, yay!
