Before deciding on a whim to try roller derby, Muffin's athletic experience was limited to childhood birthday parties at skating rinks and a very short-lived attempt to learn judo. After discovering the joys of contact sports, Muffin also briefly tried rugby, but then realized she really prefers to be on skates while hitting.

Tough Muffin was born and raised in Memphis, TN, before moving to Arkansas for college in 2002. She majored in Chemistry, a move that led her years later to become a high school science teacher. After college she spent a few years dabbling in graduate courses, odd jobs, and tutoring stints before deciding to pack up her belongings and head to the city. She moved to New York in the spring of 2009 to earn her Masters in Education and begin teaching.
