Founded in 2003, Gotham Girls Roller Derby is New York City’s only all-female, skater-operated roller derby league. The league is comprised of strong, diverse, and independent women from the world's biggest, baddest city.
As a 501c3 non-profit organization, GGRD is committed to fostering serious competition on a national and international level, developing amateur athletes for competition, and promoting the physical and mental strength and independent spirit of amateur female athletes.
The league is made up of four home teams which play within the league (the Bronx Gridlock, Brooklyn Bombshells, Manhattan Mayhem, and Queens of Pain). At times these teams compete with member teams from other Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) leagues.
The league has three inter-league competition teams that are compiled of league skaters who compete against other leagues around the country. The Gotham Girls All-Stars represent the league in sanctioned WFTDA inter-league competitions that count towards WFTDA national rankings.
The Diamond District also competes in matchups against regional foes.
The Women's Flat Track Derby Association
The Gotham Girls are a proud founding member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.
Founded in 2004, the WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women’s flat track derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among member leagues. The governing philosophy is “by the skaters, for the skaters.” Women skaters are primary managers and operators of each member league and of the association. Operational tasks include setting standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determining guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues.
Gotham Girls Roller Derby is a registered charitable organization in New York State and is exempt from Federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Gotham Girls Roller Derby logo is registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
